Gay activist and accused murderer Billy Blount's missing, but Albany PI Donald Strachey doubts Billy's guilt. The 1981 book that launched Richard Stevenson's pioneering series is a cracking mystery and a fascinating trip into bygone gay culture - before HIV, in the bad old days of bath houses and gay disco, police corruption and tacit policies of harassment.

Having found my way by strange coincidence to the Donald Strachey movies I was prompted to begin reading the books. At first I though I would skip the books of the movies I had just watched (there are four). But a niggling memory that books are almost always lots better than the movies made from them insisted I try just one or two. The first book proved the rule: the book was even better than the movie AND it also proved these movies are, far and away, the best adaptation of any (especially film noir) book to movie I have ever seen. Yes, this is broad praise indeed, but accurate. This review can easily stand for all four books made into the movies. Though some have more or less of the actual noir feel, they all are tightly crafted, well paced and more fully fleshed and grounded in the dayto day world Of an actual private investigator than most written now. This makes them not only unique, but rare, synergistic and worthy of being read 2-3 times so one misses not a nuance.Stevenson's writing is the perfect modern day adaptation within the gay mystery world of the old classic detective mysteries. The settings, mores, charcterizations and story are throughly modern. But the noir mood, ambiance and even the cadence of the language could be pulled from any of the Maltese Falcon or Thin Man eras. It's evocative, precise as to the details of investigation and also shows a connection between Don and Timmy that anchors this and all the other books.

Death Trick The Donald Strachey Mystery Series Book 1 edition by Richard Stevenson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Fixing to start the next one. Loved the characters, story line was well laid out, kept me guessing all the way to the end.
Too repititious
Initially took time to follow the characters, but having been from that era, very true to life then.
Liked it
It's been a long time since I read this book, and I'd forgotten how good it was. It really starts off the Don Strachey mystery series with a bang! And it brings back great memories of the disco decade, and has great strong characters as well. But I took a star off because of the terrible problems with formatting in the book - crazy font changes, line breaks where they shouldn't been, and a large section of text in one chapter was repeated. Don't they do any quality control when they turn these books electronic??
I have to say Death Trick could be about 25-30 pages shorter and be more streamed. Seems a little dated. Still hope Here will film it. Seen at least one of them already, considered it very good. Nothing else to say, just filling in for the post. Seems to want you to write forever and a day.
These are quite well known series of gay mysteries (twelve books now I believe). For some reason I only started them now. Terrific. The mystery is very well crafted, there are actually a lot of suspects instead of reader having to choose between only one or two well developed secondary characters to guess the villain in so many mm mysteries. I loved main character and supporting cast as well, cant wait for their further adventures. Writing is wonderful. If I had to choose one word to characterize the style, I would say "sharp" probably and interjected with humor too.
OK, so I purchased the MLR ebook edition and I've gotta say, I was very disappointed. The ebook was filled with formatting and editing errors. Not to mention the cover?!?! Horrid. horrid. horrid cover.
So, I ended up hunting down a previous print edition by another publisher, of this book as well as all the others in the series published elsewhere.
The story itself is very good. I enjoyed Stevenson's writing, his characters were interesting and the mystery kept me guessing until the end. I am fully intending to read more of the series. I just won't buy an MLR edition if I can help it, though I believe the last five or so books have only been published by MLR, so I won't be able to help buying those, sadly. This is a great book, and I'm really sad to see it so mistreated by it's current publisher.
